Not From Around Here – Mieveht Story Ep 5

The party meets Brit’s undercity contact, Gell. Gell, wanting no involvement, tells them where they definitely wont find what they are looking for. The party leaves Brit behind to settle his debts with Gell and makes their way deeper into the sewer system. After some minor complications, they begin following a winding path, further and further underground, hoping it is the right one.

Please check out our friends over at Inter-Party Conflict. They do a great show where they answer your questions about D&D and other RPGs. Maybe you’ve even got a question for them?

In this episode, we finally have Syrinscape coming through right on the recording!

The Evolution of Episode 5’s Music

Super Excited!

For those of you who follow us on Twitter, you may have seen me post this on the 28th:

Working on the post production for Monday’s episode. Trying something a bit different. Liking how its sounding right now.

At the time, I was excitedly adding in the music for episode 5. So far, I have worked music in pretty sparingly, usually only having a song every 10 minutes, or when there is a scene change. While working on this episode, I decided I wanted to add in more. This was for a few reasons. The biggest one being that I had been looking for more artists to add to the shows catalog. I also wanted it to feel more intentional and less thrown in at random. Since, honestly, if it wasn’t a scene change, where I added music was pretty random. My mood and tone on this changed while doing this for the first section of combat.

Combat in D&D takes some time. Even with me editing out quite a bit of the rules look ups and map talk, the first combat takes about 30 minutes. Somewhere around the half way point of that, I was really struggling to find good tracks to put in. Music for combat is very high energy, and it was honestly feeling exhausting to listen to. It also usually starts low and builds to an epic “conclusion.” This can work in cinema, where a fight scene might only be a few minutes, then its over. However, this rise and fall wasn’t really fitting with the pace of D&D combat. Honestly, it was getting distracting to a point where I thought people wouldn’t want to listen. As I was wrapping up the first combat, about an hour in and 3 or so hours of editing, I decided I couldn’t release this. Not the way it was.

This Isn’t Working Right…

In order to create what I thought was an easier to listen to episode, I have decided to fall back to more ambient tracks. This means that you can expect more from Syrinscape and Tabletop Audio. Extra music will still be used throughout for the mood. Such as at the start and end of combat. An important kill, or a party member going down. As the group transitions from place to place.

Today’s episode will still be posted before I am done for the night. But I wanted to get this up just in case the change raised any questions. Also, I will be adding in the first version of this episode’s combat to the bottom of this post later today. I’m curious if anyone actually preferred the first version I had. If you are reading this and know of any other artists who focus on ambient tracks, please let me know.

Erylia’s Take on Death and Resurrection – World Building Wednesday

Death – An Inevitability

Death is an unfortunate risk to most adventurers. However, in most Dungeons and Dragons settings, death is something that can be undone at the wave of a hand. When it came to building Erylia, I knew that I wanted death to be something that had meaning and made an impact. I wanted death to mean more than losing a few hundred, or a few thousand, gold. To do this, some changes had to be made to the spells that handle bringing people back.

For this World Building Wednesday, I’ll introduce some of the lore behind how resurrection works in the world, as well as the way I have changed the spell, Revivify. I haven’t gone to the higher level spells yet because none of my players even have Revivify yet, but they will follow the same themes. Continue reading

The God’s on Erylia – World Building Wednesday

Initially, I wanted to make my first World Building Wednesday post be about death and resurrection in the world of Erylia. However, while thinking about that, I realized that an important stepping stone for that discussion is the gods.

Why These Gods?

Erylia is a little on the lower end of high fantasy. The gods aren’t beings that are known to walk among mortals. To some, they aren’t even believed to exist at all. However, those who are of divine faith, do believe in a number of gods, and pray to them for various reasons. For the setting, I chose to go with the Gaelic pantheon provided in the D&D books. Without getting too far into it, two main factors went into the decision to use the Gaelic pantheon over the standard D&D pantheons.

Years ago, as a teenager, I discovered a large multi-game MMO Community. I joined them and gamed with them heavily for quite a few years until life made it hard to play MMOs like I used to. They are The Gaiscioch. Though I don’t play with them regularly anymore, I went through a lot with them in my formative years. After joining The Gaiscioch, I came across a band with a sound I had never heard before. I grew up a metal head, and still am. One day, I stumbled upon Eluveitie, a folk metal band known for singing in Gaelic.

For this first episode of Behind the Screen, Caitlin sits down with me and we talk about the show relaunch, the meet up we arranged for it and meeting up with the guys from Dump Stat Charisma. We also tease some upcoming bits of the story that has already been recorded and is being edited, including teasing a future combat episode. We wrap things up with a quick look inside Las’s head on how she feels about things so far.

After their meal, he offers to take them to The Rat’s Tail, a small bar in The Commons, owned by a black Tabaxi named Shifty. He says that this will allow them to get into the Undercity to meet his contact and hopefully find their friend. But first, a quick pit stop at The Bank of Jeffery.

A Game of Cat and… Lizard – Mieveht Story Ep 1

We rejoin the group with a debrief with Lord Cassien. He once again asks for the parties help in finding his missing daughter, Xanphia. The party agrees that they owe it to both Xanphia and Cassien to find her after they had saved the group just a few days ago.

The party decides to consult a man they had met at Lord Ezerai’s Gala the day previous, Brit. The group briefly breaks apart to gather some things that they feel will be necessary on their new mission. Unfortunately, Willow finds herself in an interesting situation with Chalul.

Mieveht Story – Prologue

This episode is a recap of events that happened in a prior campaign leading to the Mieveht Story. Previously, we had recorded and posted that campaign, but ultimately were not pleased with the audio quality. We now have a new recording set up and are back to releasing episodes. This episode will get you caught up on the important events that happened in those recordings. However, if you are interested in hearing the raw story, those recordings, The Lost Episodes, are available for only a $1 pledge on our Patreon.
