The Week of Excuses – World Building Wednesday

I feel like this week really has become an week of making excuses. It’s early Wednesday now, and the episode that was supposed to come out on Monday still isn’t finished. If you missed that and are curious about it, I wrote about it on Monday, you can read it here. Really, I should have seen this coming. I’m behind on the episode, which means I’m behind on the week, which means now that World Building Wednesday is here, I am behind on that. If you’re interested in depth on the excuses for it all, read Monday’s post.

Anyways, I sat down this morning, hoping I could quickly churn out this week’s post. I had the topic in mind, I even had the opening already written. However, I seem to do this thing, and considering my goals with these weekly blog posts, I think it’s a good thing. I sit down to type, and words just start flowing. I tell myself almost every week, “This week’s will be shorter. You’re not going into detail yet…” But either I do go into detail, on something I didn’t even plan, like last week. Or, I have so many things I want to touch on briefly, that it goes on forever.

For what was supposed to be this week’s post, I’m currently sitting at 1200 words, and am only about half done with it. What I’m working on is basically a brief overview of the entire continent of Syvahl. Essentially, I am going over each region and giving the dominant population and the regions purpose in the world. My hope, is that something so large in scope will be a point to spawn questions about the world of Erylia so I can focus some world building Wednesdays on things readers want to know about. If you have any world building questions or topics you want me to discus, please, send me an email at and include something like World Building Wednesday in the header. You can ask about Erylia, or if you have a general world building question or topic, I will add it to my list of things to cover and give my amateur thoughts on the matter.

Oh, and when I get to the calendar building portion, “The Week of Excuses” is totally going to be a thing now.

I Hate Doing This – Episode 7 Delayed

Well guys, I hate that this is the case, largely because it’s my own fault. Episode 7 isn’t ready to be posted yet. For the short version of events, I didn’t budget my time well and I’m currently done with the episode itself and am going through it to add in music, but at the point I am at now, I’m looking at about 2 hours to finish the edit, which I don’t have tonight. I’m sorry, being late on a bi-weekly show is something I was hoping wouldn’t happen. Depending on how you see things though, there is good news for when it’s live. It is our longest episode yet.

So if you’re wondering, why am I late this week? There’s a handful of things all rolled into one, but ultimately I could’ve budgeted time better and made it on time. Starting off, for this episode, I am using a new piece of editing software. I have been sampling other software that is more powerful than Audacity for a while now. None of them have been actually used to edit an episode because learning them was taking too much time and I bailed and went back to what I was familiar with. Well, Hindenburg Journalist is one I have seen recommended and has a generous 30 day free trial, so I decided to give it a shot this episode. From the beginning it was familiar and simple enough I actually stuck with it for the episode.

This is also our longest episode yet due to how things lined up. It was a short recording to begin with due to some conflicts with work schedules, but when I finished the initial edit, I was ony at 1 hour and 51 minutes. Too short for me to cut it in half like usual, but this also meant I had to get the whole things done at once this time. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize this until Saturday, or I might have avoided this issue. It’s the start of the holidays. Due to my work schedule, this won’t effect the podcast a ton, and we have already recorded what should be enough content to get us through the holidays if schedules wont line up. However, last weekend was Thanksgiving in America.

I work Mon-Thur normally, but with how the end of the year holidays lined up, I got Wed-Sun off this weekend. Initially I had grand plans of editing this whole weekend and getting all of Decembers episodes finished too. In reality, I haven’t had this much time off without a grandparent dying (aka, not a vacation) in about a year, so when it came down to it, I took advantage of the time off to relax a bit and recharge. Caitlin and Chantalle have also started streaming, and have been regularly streaming at the end of their nights for a couple weeks now. This weekend, I was able to join them, and some nights we gamed way later than they should have, and by the time they got off I would be in the mood and game some more.

So ultimately, we’re late cause I didn’t buckle down and edit like I should have. I should have made sure the episode was done before gaming all night on this long weekend. Hopefully we will be able to get ahead an episode or two so this won’t be a recurring problem. Enjoy your day everyone. Check back in a few days and episode 7 should be finished.

The Weird Wall – Mieveht Story Ep 7

Worn out from their fight with the many creatures and cretins of the Under City, the group decides to take a short rest. They look over some of the loot they’ve earned, discuss the things they’ve heard, and most importantly heal up. Left with many options after venturing to the next level, they decide to follow a trickle of water. That is, until they have a weird wall in front of them.

Little bit of meta knowledge for those of you reading this far in the show notes. I’m not very happy with my sound work in this episode. It kinda fell in the same boat as the combat section that I scrapped in episode 5. The mood was the same for too long and finding new music to keep it constantly running is one of the reasons this episode took so long to finish. It was kind of grinding me down each time I got to the end of the music track and had to find something new. So with that said. Expect something different next episode. The editing of this show is going to be changing a lot until i get into a groove I am happy with consistently.

The Grand City of Mieveht – World Building Wednesday

I’ve written about Mieveht previously, way back in August. I think it was one of the first things I did after making the website. Back then, I was going to do “lore” blog posts every once in a while, but I never followed through. With this new thing that I have actually be doing weekly, and with the current campaign taking place there, I want to revisit Mieveht. If you ready to early lore post, don’t worry, there is new information here. In fact, I am kind of glad I have already written about Mieveht once, because this gives another opportunity to show how things have changed over time. Originally, this post was going to include a city overview, followed by a break down of all of the districts. However, I got a little carried away when writing some of it’s history and that shifted this post focus.

Fleshing Out Erylia’s Gods – World Building Wednesday

This is a long one guys, so get ready for a read. Though before I delve into each of the gods and some of their individual lore, I wanted to state that like with my original attempt at The Daghdha, some of this may change over time. Also, there are quite a few topics left open after covering the gods that I want to get to later. Namely, more about the realm of Caelistra aside from the gods, but also building up lore and stats for each of their weapons. However, before getting to those, my plan for next week is more about the grand city of Mieveht. With that out of the way, enjoy the read, and if there are any questions, please ask.

Thugs and Slimes and Cults, Oh My! – Mieveht Story Ep 6

After making short work of some Under City thugs and an acidic slime, our Adventurers find themselves dealing with its other half. They carry on down the winding pathway, deeper underground, until they hear voices. Though Xanphia isn’t with them, they have located what appears to be the cult Gell “didn’t” tell them about. With the odds against them, they seek to rescue their savior, hoping to find her soon.

There is quite a bit of combat in this episode, during which I am continuing to experiment with editing styles. In this episode, I decided to leave it to Syrinscape aside from the beginning and ending of the main combat. Let me know what you think. If you think combats need a bit more variety, I can work on it in future episodes.

Not Happy With Last Week – World Building Wednesday

This week isn’t going to be what you expected. For a few reasons. The first, is some hectic scheduling due to work responsibilities. I’m currently typing this on my phone and haven’t had time to get something written between editing next week’s episode and an increased workload leading into the holidays. The second, and truthfully why I didn’t take a break from editing to work on this week’s world building Wednesday, is I’m not happy with how it turned out.

The original intent of these posts was to not only get me to flesh out parts of my world that needed it, and highlight areas that I’m lacking in, but also to show the viewers my thought process as it happens. I feel like I accomplished this in the one about death pretty well. You got to see the spell I originally had, and you got to see what u updated it to. And most of the lore and text there, was written as I was working on the spell and writing that post. I had vague ideas but nothing was written aside from the v1 of that spell. The world building there is you seeing what happened when I sat down and wrote what was in my head. Continue reading
