Soul Thistle – World Building Wednesday

Due to the work I am doing right now to get ready for the Erylian Epic launch, catching up on Patreon content, and also being in a more taxing class this quarter, I will be doing some shorter World Building Wednesdays. This one is one I had already done most of the work for in my DM Journal. This week is another piece of botany I have worked on for Erylia, though unlike bloodthorn, this is one isn’t a drug with mechanics attached to it.

Soul Thistle is an herb that is primarily known to be used in a ritual for a potential warlock to reach out to a patron and try to form a pact. Soul Thistle on Syvahl is generally an herb that is exported from The Faevale, however the Fae do not often deal with outsiders on their own, and it is very difficult to get to The Faevale. Due to this, not many people are able to get their hands on Soul Thistle, and those that do are able to charge a premium for it. There are rumors that a few people have managed to grow Soul Thistle on their own, but those who have keep the supply scarce to keep its value up.

Soul Thistle is a small flower that sprouts from a fuzzy looking bulb on its stock. The flower itself grows silver and it is said to react to the magic around it, giving it a slight glow in highly magical areas. For Soul Thistle to grow into a useful form, it must feed off of magic and absorb it, this is why it grows so natively in The Faevale, few other places are as magical. This also means that those who wish to grow it themselves have to nurture it with magic of their own, draining them of the ability to use it in the process.

There is a very small window in which you can harvest Soul Thistle. After months of absorbing magic from its surroundings, the bulb will begin to open up, allowing the magic to flow into the flowers petals. The petals begin to grow brighter and brighter until a single flower could light a small room on its own. It is during this time that the petals must be plucked and prepared. Once plucked, the petals will slowly begin to fade, but the magic that was released into them remains and they will continue to glow softly. They must then be protected and dried, because once a petal is crushed, it begins to lose its potency and will quickly become useless. If a Soul Thistle bulb opens and the petals are not harvested before falling off, the magic within them will quickly fade and the petals will darken, rendering them useless.

I’d also like to remind all of my readers here that while I intend to keep up my weekly posts here, I will be adding all of this content, and more, to World Anvil, so make sure to follow us there!

Skipping This Week – World Building Wednesday

Hey everyone stumbling across this. Just wanted to get a blurb out there that I will not be doing a World Building Wednesday post this weekend. For a couple reasons. First and foremost is that I have been spending a lot of the time that I would normally spend on this post, porting info over to World Anvil. I’ve gotten a lot of the structure in place that I need to start filling in information over there. If you want to poke around, here’s the link to Erylia on World Anvil. There’s still a lot of information I have typed up in this blog and in my world building OneNote that I need to add in, but I have enough of the ground work set that I can start populating some of the information fields. Aside from all of the work I have been doing there, I am also grinding away at getting things prepared for the next arc of the podcast. And lastly, I have been trying to get caught up on and make good with our Patreon content. I was really slacking while it was just the cast contributing, but we have fans supporting us now and I want to do right by them as well as make it worth promoting to others as well.

A couple things to highlight in World Anvil for those wanting a little bit of world information this Wednesday. I have added in what the player characters had written in our shared OneNote. Also, some tiny teasers for some of the NPCs that are featured in our upcoming campaign have been added as well.

Nightwatch – Mieveht Arc 1

Our group of ragtag escape convicts have successfully completed a few jobs for Mr. Cassien Nailo, and been unfortunately informed that they must leave the city. As we finish a campaign, all of the players will get around the mics for a special bonus episode, the Nightwatch. During a Nightwatch episode, we recap the previous arcs events and there is an open conversation between the players and the Dungeon Master about things that may have been missed or overlooked. It also gives the players a chance to ask the DM why he may have made some of the decisions he made or how certain things fit into the story, or if they were completely made up on the spot.

The ambient track used in the beginning and end of the Nightwatch is Woodland Campsite by Tabletop Audio

World Anvil – World Building Wednesday

This week isn’t going to be a post that’s actually about the world of Erylia. Instead, this post will be more for other world builders that don’t already know about this tool. As the Dungeon Master for Adventures in Erylia, I have come to absolutely love online tools to help make my work easier, more organized, and most importantly, digital. We have adopted Dungeon Fog for making battle maps, D&D Beyond for character management, and now I am testing out one for world building.

Ny’Vae’Rehl and the Nailo Family – World Building Wednesday

I’ve been wanting to get to this post for a long time. Ever since the plot line of the Mieveht Story had its course set. With this week’s episode, An Emotional Encounter, I can finally post about the Nailo Family and their history without it skewing the story. I’m also doing something for the first time this Wednesday. Cassien’s history will be told through a narrative story instead of the more technical tone these posts have taken so far.

We’ve Been At This For A Year!

So thanks to a little Twitter notification telling me the Adventures in Erylia Twitter account is 1 year old, I realized we’ve been doing this for a year now! We don’t have any big anniversary plans right now, because I tend to consider our relaunch the new anniversary for the show. However, I was still pretty excited to see that we’ve actually been doing this for a full year now. To us, we’re just some friends who get together once or twice a month to play dungeons and dragons with some microphones in front of us.

It’s been eventful and exciting. We launched once, with only a cell phone and a blue yeti to record with. I struggled to get episodes out on time. I struggled with how bad our audio sounded when I compared it to other shows I listen to. So after a few months we made a great change, and our numbers have shown it was worth it. Before the decision to relaunch the show, we were lucky to break 20 downloads in a month. Today’s episode is already at 20 downloads and our average is getting into the 50s and 60s.

Here’s to another year Adventurers! We’re excited to keep going and keep improving, and we’re happy you’ve chosen to come with us on this journey. To call back to our past, here’s our very first episode, poor audio quality and all, which is usually only available to Patreon supporters.

An Emotional Encounter – Mieveht Story Ep 10

Having returned to The Den with Cassien’s daughter, completing their job, the group has a meeting with him to learn about events going forward. Emotions run high as the group learns more than they expected about the Nailo family. Unfortunately, Cassien has to break some disappointing news to them, they can no longer stay in The Den. After conversing with each other and with Cassien, they decided to stick together and set their sights on the region of Khaerynthia, close to Chalul’s home.

This episode concludes our first arc of the Mieveht Story. Next episode will be an episode of the Night Watch, a special episode where the players and the DM all sit down and discuss the events of the previous arc. This gives everyone that chance to ask some meta questions and learn things about the previous arc now that it is too late for the meta knowledge to effect the story. This also gives the DM a chance to get a feel for the players’ current mood and see what they think of the story so far, and ask what’s missing.

If you like what we have been doing, consider joining our Patreon. You can donate monthly to show your support and help us cover our operating expenses, as well as potentially fund upgrades and other media going forward.
