Hey Adventurers!
It has been a while since the last Erylian Extra. I know I had said that I planned on getting that back on track for a regular monthly release again, but I think as things slowed down I realized that I am not happy with that format. However, I still want to utilize this blog to get news out to you guys who want to keep up with what we have going on. Ultimately, the best place to keep up with us day to day, and to be able to directly ask us questions, will be joining our Discord. A lot of the info here will be the same info shared in Discord originally. However, there are some major benefits to building upon that info in here. It will be easier to share with others and easier to find than wading through the Discord channels. I also have more that I can add into the posts here with things like images, videos, and media players.
Damian the DM has had the wonderful opportunity over the last couple weeks to be a guest on not one but two other podcasts. He joined long time friends and supporters of the show Gabe and Jeff on their podcast, Inter-Party Conflict to talk about what it is like running an actual play podcast. He was also asked to join Avallaun from The Village Witch to talk about homebrew worldbuilding, dragons, and a side helping of running an actual play podcast as well.
Inter-Party Conflict is a show built on the idea of answering questions from listeners and the role-playing community as a whole. I had the unique opportunity to answer questions their listeners had about what goes on behind the scenes of running an actual play podcast. This also created a space to talk a little bit about what it is like running the show from a behind the scenes perspective. Here are the main questions we set out to answer:
Unfortunately, in the time since this blog post was made, this podcast has ended and the episode is no longer available, but I have left the original text and simply replaced the broken media player with this message
The Village Witch is a show that mostly focuses on talking about myths and legends in the world to get our minds off of the things we deal with day to day. Avallaun has also started bringing on guests for longer interview segments to talk about thing that have a passion for in the geek and nerd culture realms. We got together to talk about some of the things I have done differently than the published D&D setting for the world of Erylia. She has been running a series on dragons and with some of the things being learned about with the dragons in Erylia, and more to come as the current arc progresses, we put our focus on that.
By now, you may have seen our art for Fioch, the legendary great axe of Kaerevak, and Dragonbond to Doitean. If not, that is the axe you are seeing now. It was done by the wonderful Daniel Lee. He was a treat to work with through the entire process of the commission. He was very flexible and willing to alter the drafts at each step to get things exactly how we wanted them, and in the end we were able to have all three of Fioch’s forms represented.
I am excited to announce that we have secured another spot in Daniel’s schedule. We are going to be having Lobhadh, the twin daggers of Aigeadach drawn up next. Hopefully we will be getting a finished version before the new year, but with the holidays coming, we all know how crazy things can be.
I need to give a huge shout out to our Guild Member’s over on Patreon as well. It is with their support that we are able to even get this art made. Right now, we are able to sustain one of these pieces from Daniel per month, so long as his schedule allows working with us. We are also getting very close to our first milestone which will unlock an extra monthly behind the scenes episode. Ultimately, I would love to have our party art redone by him as well, but that is a long ways off. If you want to see more of this, please consider supporting us on Patreon, every dollar helps and goes into the show.
Before the pandemic hit, we used to stream our live recording sessions of Adventures in Erylia into our Discord. For a few reasons that has fallen away. With us ending up taking such long breaks between recording, when we were able to actually get together for a session, so much of our focus was on keeping the show going that with our new recording set up, we never took the time to figure out how to get everything back into the computer while also recording the audio. Since all of that has happened my own set up has changed quite a bit for streaming and with the recent guest sessions I have been able to try out some ways of getting audio to Discord while also recording. The only thing I haven’t tried working with yet is getting Syrinscape working with the new set up, but I plan to start having our sessions go out live in Discord once again. Our next session is currently planned for December 11th, so join our Discord and keep an eye out. I am hoping to eventually migrate us over to Twitch as well. It would probably start out as audio online as it is in Discord, but maybe by the end of next year we can look at some form of video as well.
Something that has been being talked about behind the scenes for a few months now, and has been pushed even further by my recent guest appearances, is the idea of having guests on Adventures in Erylia. For a few reasons, this has been something we have avoided. Our cast is all in person and bringing in someone remote is something we are not familiar with. Something that isn’t well known in our posted episodes is we record late. It is not uncommon for us to start actually getting into our sessions until after 8 or 9pm and go until after midnight. Also, our show is pretty simulationist and moves through the passage of time fairly slowly to give a lot of time for in game roleplay. All of these add up to the idea of bringing a guest on as being difficult. However, this is something we are planning to work on in 2022. Without diving too far into details, I have been in talks with a couple people for two different styles of guest appearances.
